HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) is a virus that weakens the immune system in humans and is transmitted through direct contact of a mucous membrane or the bloodstream with a bodily fluid containing HIV, such as blood, semen, vaginal fluid, pre-seminal fluid, and breast milk.

AIDS (Acquired Immune or Immuno Deficiency Syndrome) is a disease of the human immune system caused by HIV.

Symptoms of HIV may include:

• Pulmonary infections including pneumonia and TB
• Continuous coughing or a dry cough
• Swollen lymph glands in the neck, underarm or groin area
• Flu-like symptoms, including fevers, chills and night sweats
• Gastrointestinal infections often due to fungal and parasitic infections and chronic diarrhea.  In some cases the diarrhea may be a side effect of the antibiotics and some prescribed drugs and in later stages may reflect changes in the way the intestinal tract absorbs nutrients; regarded as a component of HIV-related wasting,
• Rapid weight loss
• Extreme and constant tiredness
• A thick, whitish coating of the tongue or mouth (thrush) that is caused by a yeast infection and sometimes accompanied by a sore throat
• Severe or recurring vaginal yeast infections
• Severe numbness or pain in the hands or feet, the loss of muscle control and reflex, paralysis or loss of muscular strength
• An altered state of consciousness, personality change, or mental deterioration
• Tumors and malignancies; including bleeding from growths on the skin and in the mouth and on the tongue
  Individuals with AIDS also have an increased risk of developing various cancers such as Kaposi's sarcoma, cervical cancer and cancers of the immune system known as lymphomas.
